Hoosier Life Study

Tell us about life in Indiana: one year later

Welcome

You may remember that you or someone in your household participated in the Hoosier Life Study between August 2019 and February 2020.

The Hoosier Life team is back with a new, shorter version of the previous survey. This new Hoosier Life Study will focus on many of the same topics as the previous survey, like your experience and attitudes about changing and extreme weather conditions, your home habits, and where you get your information. Also, some new topics, such as your perception of current political and social events and your health were added to the survey. The goal of this study is to see how you are doing and if your opinions and habits have changed over the last year.

We're looking forward to hearing how things have been for you, one year later. We still care what you think!

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why was I contacted?

You or someone in your household answered in the Hoosier Life survey that you would like to be contacted for future Indiana University studies. The same person in the household who filled out the last Hoosier Life survey should fill out this new survey. It is important that we follow up with the same person so that the responses are from the same point of view, ensuring a continuity in the data.

What if the person who filled out the previous Hoosier Life survey is no longer living at this address?

Unfortunately, since this is a follow-up to the first Hoosier Life survey, only that person is eligible for this study. Please contact us and we will be happy to remove you from the contact list.

  • What is the purpose of the study?

The purpose of the follow-up study is to understand and compare your actions and opinions — about what you value, what you’ve heard, what you do, the environment, and how you feel — over time.

  • Why does this study matter?

The responses given by you and more than 2,700 of your fellow Hoosiers have helped our study team and local officials across Indiana to understand how extreme weather events are affecting Hoosiers in different parts of the state, how families are working to improve their lives, and what information Indiana residents need to inform themselves of changing environmental conditions. Your willingness to follow up with a shortened version of that survey will tell us much more about how unexpected challenges affect our ability to plan for the future.

Already, newspapers across Indiana have featured articles about the responses that you and your fellow Hoosiers gave in the first study. Check out our news media page!

  • Is participation voluntary?

Yes! The choice to take the survey is up to you. You may skip any question in the survey that you do not want to answer and you can stop taking the survey at any point.

  • How long will the survey take?

The survey should take about 10 minutes of your time.

  • When and how will I know if I am a gift card winner?

As a token of our gratitude, you will be given the opportunity to win one of twenty $50 Visa gift cards or one of five $100 gift card packages including Amazon and Walmart gift cards. At the end of the survey, you will be asked if you would like to enter the gift card drawing. Gift card winners will be selected two weeks after the survey closes. Gift cards will be mailed to the address provided in the gift card question. The odds of winning are about 1 out of 48.

  • Who is funding this study?

This study is based at Indiana University and is funded by Indiana University's Grand Challenges initiative.

  • How is my privacy protected?

Your responses will be stored in locked offices on password-protected computers, servers, and databases that only a select few researchers will ever have access to. The file that contains your responses will be kept confidential. Everyone who works on the study has completed University Training on protecting respondents' data.
